PRAGUE CASTLE
Prague Castle is the castle in Prague where the Czech kings, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of the Czech Republic (and Czechoslovakia) have had their offices.
Prague Castle is one of the biggest castles in the world. Aaccording to the Guinness book of records, Prague Castle is the biggest ancient castle at about 570 meters in length and an average of about 130 meters wide.
Its history stretches back to the 9th century (870). The castle contains the St Vitus Cathedral and the crown jewels of the Bohemian Kingdom. The neighbourhood of the Prague Castle is called Hradcany.
ST. VITUS CATHEDRAL
Saint Vitus Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. The full name of the cathedral is St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral.
Located within Prague Castle and containing the tombs of many Bohemian kings, this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture.
Construction began in 1344 according to the designs of Matthias of Arras; after his death in 1352 it was taken over by Peter Parler. He completed only the choir and part of a southern transept. The cathedral was not finished until the 19th century, when the nave and western twin-tower façade were built.
CROWN JEWELS OF THE BOHEMIAN KINGDOM
The jewels and the Crown of Saint Wenceslas of Bohemia are kept in Prague Castle and are displayed to the public only occasionally.
The crown is named and dedicated after the Duke and Patron Saint Wenceslas I of the Premyslids dynasty of Bohemia. The crown has an unusual design, with vertical 'fleurs-de-lis' standing at the front, back and sides. Made from gold and precious stones, its weight is 2.475 kg.
The crown was made for King Charles IV in 1346. Since 1867 it has been stored in St. Vitus Cathedral of Prague Castle. The jewels have always played an important role as a symbol of Bohemian statehood.
HRADCANY
Hradcany, the Castle District, is the Prague district surrounding Prague Castle.
Hradcany was an independent borough until 1784, when the four independent boroughs that had formerly constituted Prague were proclaimed a single city. The other three were Lesser Quarter, Old Town and New Town.
