Santorini Flights, Ferries and Getting Around
Santorini is one of the major tourist destinations in Greece and as a result it can be easily reached by air or water. Sailing into the caldera of Santorini as the sugar cube villages perched high atop the cliffs come into view is an awesome experience.
There are regular ferries connecting Santorini with other islands in the Cyclades, the Dodecanese Islands, Crete, Piraeus and Thessaloniki. There are also hydrofoil services to nearby Cyclades Islands, and to Rafina on the mainland.
The main port of Santorini is Athinios. There are a few places to grab a snack, but otherwise it is just an area where buses and taxis meet the ferries as they constantly flow into the island. Many of the hotels will arrange taxi pick-up for you if you give them your arrival details.
If you are looking to save time, there are regular flights to Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Heraklion (Crete).
In the summer, Santorini is serviced by local buses that travel from Fira to Akrotiri, Oia, Monolithos, Kamari and Perissa. Buses regularly depart the tourist resort beach areas for the port to meet your ferry schedules, and it will be fairly easy to get between the main villages and ancient sites.
There are many charming inland villages and wineries around Santorini and renting a car or bike will allow you more freedom to explore.
