URQUHART CASTLE
Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness in Scotland along a strategic road, the A82, between Fort William and Inverness. It is close to the village of Drumnadrochit.
It is not known precisely when the castle was built, but records show the existence of a castle on this site from the early 1200s. The building was blown up in 1692 to prevent it becoming a Jacobite stronghold.
Today, the castle is owned by the National Trust for Scotland, and run by Historic Scotland.
Urquhart Castle is Historic Scotland's 3rd busiest site.
