The Republic of Croatia is a crescent-shaped country in Europe bordering the Mediterranean, Central Europe and the Balkans. Its capital is Zagreb. In recent history, it was a republic in the SFR Yugoslavia, but it achieved independence in 1991. It is a candidate for membership of the European Union.
Croatia is generally a safe place, similar to most Westernized countries. Although petty crimes can occur, one should take the necessary precautions against such things. Otherwise, you should feel safe to travel in almost any part of the country without fear.
Croatia has an economy based mostly on various services and some, mostly light, industry. Tourism is a notable source of income during the summer.

Many Croatians speak English as their second language, but Italian and German aren't uncommon either. People in the tourist industry most often speak English quite well, as do the younger generation, especially in the tourist areas of Istria, along the coast down to Dubrovnik, and in the capital, Zagreb.
Croatian is not an easy language to learn, but the people like when foreign travellers use it for basic things such as greetings and thank-you.
