China is a country in continental East Asia with some outer territories in Central Asia and offshore islands in the Pacific Ocean that since 1949 has been divided de facto between the People's Republic of China (Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and islands) and the Republic of China (governing Taiwan and several outlying islands of Fujian Province). For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences.
China is a very diverse place with large variations in culture, language, customs, and economic levels. The economic landscape is particularly diverse ranging from the major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai which are basically first world to rural areas in the interior which are still at third world levels.
