The ARGO SARONIC GULF ISLANDS are very close to Athens and Piraeus, making them a popular getaway for Greeks.The Argo Saronic Greek Islands include; Salamina, AEGINA, ANGISTRI, POROS, HYDRA, and SPETSES. These islands are beautiful and are ideal for a one day get-away, or for a few weeks. The islands are very green, and you can find secluded bays to enjoy the crystal clear waters. The towns are quaint, with pretty harbours, cobblestone streets, and neo-classical buildings. |

CRETE is the largest and most southerly of the Greek Islands. The landscape is diverse with mountains, gorges, sheer coasts, plateaus, and large sandy beaches. Crete was in her glory 4,000 years ago as the home to the Minoan civilization and you can see remnants of this throughout the island and most noticably at the PALACE OF KNOSSOS, just outside Heraklion.
There are four prefectures of Crete; CHANIA, RETHYMNO, HERAKLION, and LASITHI. The Cretans are a very proud people and in many areas have preserved their traditional customs. |

The CYCLADES are the most popular of the Greek Islands, and some say the most picturesque. This is where you will see the archetypal dazzling white sugar cube buildings (Cycladic architecture) and blue domed churches set against typically rugged landscape. They are regularly serviced by ferries and flights and are easy to get to and around. The are over 2,200 islands, islets, and rock outcroppings in the Cyclades forming a ring around the ancient center 'Delos'. The main islands include ANDROS, AMORGOS, FOLEGANDROS, IOS, Kea, Kythnos, MILOS, MYKONOS, NAXOS, PAROS, SANTORINI, Serifos, SIFNOS, SYROS, TINOS. |
| Dodecanese or Dodekanese Greek Islands: |

The DODECANESE lie to the east of the Cyclades, near the coast of Turkey. The islands of the Dodecanese, like so many of the Greek Islands, are the actual mountain tops of land that once connected Greece with Asia Minor. The land sank into the Mediterranean sea four million years ago.
The Dodecanese are an archepelago of over 1,000 islands, islets and rock outcrops. The main islands of the Dodecanese are; Astypalea, Chalki, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kassos, KOS, Leros, Lipsi, Nissyros, Patmos, RHODES (or Rhodos), Symi, and Tilos. |
| Ionian Greek Islands: |

The IONIAN ISLANDS are located west of Mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea. The Ionian archipelago includes CORFU, ITHAKI, KEFALLONIA, Lefkada, Paxi, and ZAKYNTHOS. Kithera is part of this chain but separated by the mainland and located south of the Peloponnese.
The Ionian Islands, due to their location, have been largely influenced by Western Europe. The islands are lush and green, the greenest of all the chains, and some of the beaches are the most spectacular in all of Greece. Kefallonia has recently become famous as the beautiful setting for Corelli's Mandolin.

| North East Aegean Greek Islands: |

The NORTH EAST AEGEAN GREEK ISLANDS have retained their traditional character and charm. The islands are relatively quiet and have not suffered from mass tourist development. Here you can swim in crystal clear Aegean blue waters. The Aegean Island chain consists of 11 main islands; LESVOS, CHIOS, IKARIA, Samos, Thasos, Samothraki, Limnos, Ahios Efstratios, Oinouses, Psara, and Samos. . There are also the islets of Fourni. All of the Aegean Islands are rich in history and natural wonders and offer lots for the visitor to explore. |
| Sporades Greek Islands: |

EVIA, the largest of the Sporades Greek Islands, is separated from the mainland by a channel only 40 metres wide. The channel is known as the Strait of Evriposa where you can see a unique phenomenon related to the moon and tidal phenomenons. Every 6 hours, the the current in the striaght changes direction.
A bridge connects the mainland with Chalkida, the pretty capital of Evia (or Euboea). The Sporades includes; Alonissos, EVIA, SKIATHOS, SKOPELOS, and Skyros. |
