Mainland Greece

When most people think of holidays in Greece they think of the Greek islands. The idea of all these islands, each different from the next, the whitewashed houses and beautiful beaches is an enticement to anyone.

But lost in the commotion over Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes and Corfu is the fact that some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece are not on the islands, but on the mainland.

Mainland Greece is truly magical.

Delphi, Greece

You can take a guided tour of Mainland Greece. There are all sorts of fabulous options for one day excursions, or a week long tour. We opted for the four day Classical Greece Tour on our first trip to Greece because it seemed like the easiest way to see so many of the archaeological sites, and in the shortest time (we were anxious to get to the islands). We really weren't sure what to expect from the tour - and we didn't consider ourselves "tour" people, but we absolutely loved it and both agreed that it was the best part of an all-around outstanding holiday.

You can use a driver like the wonderful George Kokkotos, who will give you more of an understanding because he can translate and act as a host and guide to his country. He'll take away the headaches of finding your way around, as you travel in his air-conditioned Mercedes. Though prohibitively expensive if you are traveling alone and are poor, the more people in your party contributing to the fare the more of a bargain he becomes.

You can rent a car, which will give you the most flexibility. But be forewarned, there are many accidents on Greek roads, and you will travel great distances between some archaeological sites.

You can use public transportation, which in the case of buses and bus stations may get tedious, but in the case of the wonderful little trains would be a joy.

You can also do a combination of all four, or just pick one perfect place with clean sea, a nice stretch of golden sand, some excellent tavernas and some nightlife, and just veg out and do nothing but enjoy. Anyway you do it on the Mainland. It is the heart and soul of Greece.

DELPHI, Central Greece DELPHI, center of the earth
After the Acropolis, Delphi is the most popular archaeological site in Greece. Located 180 kilometers from Athens, a trip to Delphi is listed in just about every tour itinerary and is by far the most popular day trip out of Athens. Delphi has a special meaning, more than just another collection of ruins in a country that is full of them. Delphi in ancient times was considered the center of the known world, the place where heaven and earth met. This was the place where man was closest to the Gods ...

MACEDONIA, Central Greece MACEDONIA, Northern Greece
In the classical period the Greek influence became even more pronounced and with the reigns of Phillip and his son Alexander the Great. The palace became home to painters, poets, philosophers (including Aristotle) and musicians from all over the world. It was during this period that Macedonia became the dominant world power, due to the exploits of Alexander.

NAFPLIO, Peloponnese, Greece NAFPLIO, former capital of Greece
Nafplio was once the capital of Greece. Today, it's the perfect place to base yourself for visiting some of the best archaeological sites in Greece. Nearby is the ancient civilization of Mycenae and the impressive theatre at Epidaurus with it's reknown accoustics ...

OLYMPIA, Peloponnese, Greece OLYMPIA, birthplace of the Olympics
Olympia is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Greece. Even cruise ships dock at the nearby port of Katakolo and put people on buses to visit the site. The village of Olympia itself is a collection of tourist shops, cafes, restaurants and a Historical Museum of the Olympic Games ...

Some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece are not on the islands, but on the mainland in places like the Peloponnese. The Peloponnese, or Peleponisos, or Peloponessos or however you want to spell it, is what many people think of as the real Greece. Beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, unparalleled natural beauty and a history as long as civilization ...

The influence of the east is more pronounced, not just in the delicious food, but in the relaxed lifestyle. It's a big city with an almost college town feel, like Boston or Austin, but Greek. The nightlife is exceptional, the bars and clubs play great music. The restaurants and ouzeries are among the best in Greece. ...
